A sharp deviation from the norm.

Professor Wole Soyinka is a Nigerian Nobel laureate in literature. He and six others called the “Original Seven” founded the Pyrates Confraternity at the University College, Ibadan, Nigeria, now the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1952, that is 70 years ago. It was founded basically to drum up support for human rights and social justice in Nigeria hence its motto is “Against all moribund conventions.”

It seeks to eliminate class privilege and elitism, especially among students of middle-class upbringing and colonial colouration.

Some forty-five years ago, members adorned in their colourful regalia used to hold their outings on top of the platform at Trenchard Hall at the University of Ibadan to the admiration of students and other members of the University community.

During Students Union elections,  this organization used to support the presidential candidate that had the best manifestoes

that would favour the generality of students. They had a newsletter where their strong opinions about topical issues on the campus were expressed objectively and students who were notorious in certain aspects of their lifestyles were caricatured.

Some of their noble contributions to social values included mending bad roads within the campus and in front of the University’s gate.
Its members also used to donate blood at the blood bank of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Contrary to uninformed opinions, the National Association of Seadogs (NAS),  also known as the Pyrates Confraternity, is a Nigerian charitable and humanitarian organization.
It still thrives in Nigeria today,
expressing its stand against all forms of injustice in our society in some national dailies on a fairly regular basis and its members hold key positions in government and private sectors within and outside Nigeria.
But today, many other confraternities have emerged in our tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Their activities are tangential to those of the original founding fathers of the first confraternity in a tertiary institution in Nigeria.

Their members are now into many types of drug abuse.
They are armed with all sorts of dangerous weapons when attending their meetings.

Reports of deadly clashes between cult members have become a regular feature in many newspapers.

A return to the original purpose for which the organization was founded is highly desirable.

This will nurture responsible youths who can become great leaders of our country tomorrow.

The importance of a manufacturer’s manual.

Taking the pains to understand the instructions in a manufacturer’s manual before operating a device or an equipment could save money, time or even life. Every device or equipment is accompanied by the manufacturer’s manual. The manufacturer has a picture of the finished product in his mind before starting the manufacturing process. Therefore the use to which a product is put is determined by the manufacturer, not by the end-user. A product could be damaged or become harmful to an operator when the manufacturer’s instructions on how to operate it are not carefully followed. A buyer could also forfeit the warranty on the product. Abuse is inevitable when the purpose of a thing is not known. For example, no matter how much a beautifully designed and expensive ballpen resembles a spatula, it cannot spatulate like a cheap wooden spatula because their functions are differently determined by their manufacturer.

On average, a mobile phone is designed to perform the following eight functions- voice communication, exchanging e-mails, internet browsing, PDA(personal digital assistance), SMS (short message service for text messaging), digital camera, watching the video and listening to music. But today, due to limited understanding of the instructions in manufacturers’ manuals multiplied millions of mobile phone users across the globe limit the use of their handsets to voice communication, SMS (short message service for text messaging) and listening to music. In the same tone, disregarding the manufacturer’s instruction to insert a small firing pin renders an armoured tank useless. The applications are numerous and they all underscore the importance of the need to always pay attention to the instructions and guidance in a manufacturer’s manual.

Is it all on women?

Once a good woman gets attached to you she becomes loyal, committed and faithful. She can be jealous at times because she wants to protect her own. She can accept your mistakes sometimes and oftentimes, even when you are lying, she could choose to believe you. But when a woman leaves because she is fed up with a man’s lies she never comes back the same. Some of the irritating things that men do which could make a wife start cheating are, not having time for your wife, abuse of any type and cheating on her. When a woman cheats on her husband she has probably had enough and is ready to call it quits. Always remember that the death of the husband of a promiscuous woman comes cheaply. A man can initiate and sustain harmony in the home by acting on the following tips.

-Demonstrate your love and trust each time an opportunity presents itself.

-Don’t take revenge.

-Put forgiveness into practice.

-Don’t allow her to be bored even when not co-located.

-Assist her with house chores.

-Don’t allow your wife to dress irresponsibly.

-Don’t let her borrow money from your friends, neighbours or relations because it could construct a bridge for cheating.

Breakfast before brushing.

Maintenance of good oral hygiene is important because the mouth is where food is chewed before been passed to the stomach where the digestive process of food is completed. If one cultivates the habit of brushing his teeth the last thing at night before going to bed there will be no food particles left in the mouth for bacteria to break down and release an acid which would cause cavities, especially in the back teeth called premolars and molars. Streptococcus mutans is the most common bacterium responsible for teeth decay. It forms a sticky film known as plaque. It is when plaque is allowed to accumulate that its bacteria content damages the hard structure called enamel in a tooth. It also damages the deeper surrounding structures of the tooth. When mixed with minerals, plaque forms tartars that cannot be removed by regular tooth brushing unless a dentist is consulted. Bad breath or mouth odour, destruction of the surrounding tissues of teeth and teeth discolouration could be experienced when proper cleaning of teeth is not done. However, all the above effects could be reduced or avoided by taking the following simple steps.

1. Brush your teeth properly the last thing at night.

2. Rinse your mouth thoroughly the following morning, take your breakfast and brush your teeth after breakfast. This way your teeth are kept clean and your mouth is fresh as you go to work.

3. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after taking snacks at break time, lunch and supper. Brush your teeth again the last thing at night before going to bed. Maintain the cycle for positive results.

What is the cause?

Mouth odour could be frustrating and embarrassing when so much money has been spent on mouthwashes and dentist’s appointments without any improvement. It is unpleasant when friends beat a retreat as you approach to chat with them. It brings stigmatization, ridicule and low self-esteem. It could force an affected person to become an introvert especially if he has come to his wit’s end without a concrete solution. This could cause loss of relationships and some opportunities one could have got via interacting with people. When brushing your teeth in the morning and the last thing at night and visiting your dentist regularly to fill decayed teeth, scaling and polishing your teeth fail to remove the mouth odour, the root cause needs to be traced and eliminated. Only about 5% of millions of people who have mouth odour across the globe are treated annually because the symptoms are often treated while the root cause(s) are neglected. Type 1 halitosis (mouth odour) is caused primarily by poor oral hygiene that could result from poor teeth brushing habits while type 2 halitosis (mouth odour) causes recalcitrant mouth odour that persists regardless of good oral hygiene habits. It is caused by decayed undigested food in the intestine. It is not all the food we eat that gets digested or removed as excreta from our system. Some of them cling to the walls of our intestines where they are acted upon by bacteria to release odour directly to the lungs and finally to the mouth. Gargling with mouthwashes that are only switched around in the mouth and spat out cannot eliminate this type of mouth odour. A detoxifying therapy is needed to remove undigested food from the intestines. If you find yourself in the situation described above, visit your family doctor for proper examination and treatment.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus your own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.https://widgets.wp.com/likes/index.html?ver=20210413#blog_id=193973869&post_id=7&origin=mustryze.wordpress.com&obj_id=193973869-7-60bbaf6698dadPosted byTop TemeesPosted inUncategorized

  1. Top Temees EditI intend to publicize my views in my areas of interest. I will be writing on health matters with some bias for dentistry, the Christian religion and a potpourri of wisdom nuggets. I would love to connect with people who want to know, express and exchange their views on simple health principles and wisdom nuggets in life. If I blog successfully in the coming year, I would feel accomplished as having added to the awareness of people in the areas of my interest.LikeReply

What is the way out?

The adage which says prevention is better than cure still stands tall in the order of available steps to be taken to minimize or avoid dental problems. For example, a child’s teeth start forming while the baby is still in the mother’s womb. Therefore a baby whose mother is on a balanced diet during pregnancy will benefit from the mother’s nutrients and vitamins such that even its set of milk teeth will be hard and resistant to caries. When such teeth are properly maintained they are also succeeded by strong permanent teeth. A simple rule worth remembering is that the same food that is good for the body is good for the teeth. Foods can generally be classified into “grow”, “glow” and “go” types. “Grow foods” are bodybuilders which supply the protein requirements of the body. “Glow foods” are protective. They supply vitamins and minerals to the body. “Go foods” are concentrated energy foods that supply the calories required to make one active all day.
