Maintenance of good oral hygiene is important because the mouth is where food is chewed before been passed to the stomach where the digestive process of food is completed. If one cultivates the habit of brushing his teeth the last thing at night before going to bed there will be no food particles left in the mouth for bacteria to break down and release an acid which would cause cavities, especially in the back teeth called premolars and molars. Streptococcus mutans is the most common bacterium responsible for teeth decay. It forms a sticky film known as plaque. It is when plaque is allowed to accumulate that its bacteria content damages the hard structure called enamel in a tooth. It also damages the deeper surrounding structures of the tooth. When mixed with minerals, plaque forms tartars that cannot be removed by regular tooth brushing unless a dentist is consulted. Bad breath or mouth odour, destruction of the surrounding tissues of teeth and teeth discolouration could be experienced when proper cleaning of teeth is not done. However, all the above effects could be reduced or avoided by taking the following simple steps.
1. Brush your teeth properly the last thing at night.
2. Rinse your mouth thoroughly the following morning, take your breakfast and brush your teeth after breakfast. This way your teeth are kept clean and your mouth is fresh as you go to work.
3. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after taking snacks at break time, lunch and supper. Brush your teeth again the last thing at night before going to bed. Maintain the cycle for positive results.
